Madden NFL 21 Ultimate Team Progression Guide

Ultimate Team has become one of the most popular features in Madden 21. At its core, Ultimate Team continues to revolve around the pursuit of fielding the best team possible. The card-collecting mode has a dizzying amount of depth, though. This makes it sometimes hard to navigate, even if you are familiar with the mode from previous iterations.

To eliminate the confusion for new and longtime fans. Our guide walks you through a few tips on how to improve your team.

Completing Missions

Missions is a dedicated blueprint to the Ultimate Team experience. When you first open up Ultimate Team, you’ll be guided through a series of challenges.

Working through these challenges will organically show you the lay of the land in Ultimate Team. From learning how to complete sets to acquire useful players and understanding MUT levels, Missions will walk you through the mode while earning rewards. Spend several hours in Missions as an Ultimate Team beginner. You’ll better understand how to build a successful team and navigate the various styles of play available in Ultimate Team.

Building Sets

In the Team section, you can view your progress on Sets. Completing Sets unlocks high-quality players. You’ll notice that some sets have daunting requirements, such as acquiring 70 or more cards.

Don’t get too hung up on completing sets in the beginning, though. If you work your way through missions, you’ll get yourself in prime shape to start cashing in. You can add cards to sets by examining them individually. Remember that once you add a card to a set, it’s removed from your active lineup. This is why you shouldn’t worry about sets from the jump.

Upgrading players

Upgrading players is a one-step process. You can now upgrade players using Training. You can easily see if a card can be upgraded by clicking on a player. From there, it will tell you how much training it costs to upgrade a card to its next tier. A tier bump increases a player’s vital attributes and overall rating.

Not all cards can be upgraded. Very few of your cards will be eligible when you start your ultimate team journey. The cards that have upgrade eligibility mostly fall into the Gold/Elite/Power-Up categories. The type of card — bronze, silver, gold, elite, power-up — is easily visible below each player’s name. For bronze and silver cards, often what you see is what you get. Gold and elite cards can only be bumped up once through training, while power-up cards have multiple upgrade tiers.

Dump unneeded players

As you start accumulating more cards, you’ll no longer need many of the original players on your roster. You can quick-sell cards at the bottom of each card’s menu for a few training points apiece. However, it only costs a handful of points to make initial upgrades to cards.

As you earn better cards, you’re better served to drop players that are low on the depth chart and using the acquired Training to improve your higher-rated players. Keep in mind that bronze and silver cards can’t be auctioned anyway, so you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by quick-selling unneeded cards for Training.

Coins and Points

Madden 21 Coins and Points are the two main forms of currency you can use in the store and auction house. You earn coins through play, while Points cost real money.

There are a number of ways to farm coins in the game. When you play through the solo challenges in the game, you will receive cards and these can be of different types: Gold, Silver, and if you’re really lucky, you can also get Elite cards. You can sell these cards off through an auction to get your hands on some coins.

Look out for cards that you can Quicksell because their values won’t change, so they’re useful to make a quick buck. Make sure you check into auctions to see if any valuable cards are being sold cheap but make sure these are valuable first and you can then trade these for a nice profit.

Competitive matches

Once you reach MUT level 10, you can compete in head-to-head seasons and Salary Cap matches. Taking your Ultimate Team online against users across the world leads to the best rewards. Salary Cap ranked matches let you wager 9,000 or 15,000 coins in a single-elimination tournament. Even if you lose in the first round, you’ll get 6,000 or 9,000 coins back, respectively.

We recommend spending some time in Missions (beyond the level 10 requirement) and upgrading your team before diving into the head-to-head modes, but once you’re feeling confident, playing online can lead to the best rewards in Ultimate Team. And the more you play online, the better your team will get thanks to ample funds provided by wins.
