NBA 2K21 High Pricing Brings Bad News For Future

With the release of NBA 2K21, games on next-gen consoles might see a price increase. In a press release this morning, Take-Two Interactive announced NBA 2K21 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, as well as their current-gen counterparts. Noticeably, the standard next-gen versions of the game came with a suggested retail price of $69.99 —a $10 jump from the usual $59.99 for most 3A games.

In essence, the standard edition will cost $10 more on both next-generation game consoles. Also, if you purchase the standard version for a current-generation system, your license will not transfer to a next-gen console, so you'd be looking at buying it a second time to play on both.

If you want to play the game when it releases and intend on getting an Xbox Series X or PS5 later this year, the $99.99 Mamba Forever Edition offers dual access, with a caveat.

"It includes dual-access where purchasing Mamba Forever Edition on either current or next-generation platforms provides a copy of the standard edition game on the other generation at no additional cost, within the same console family," 2K Games explains.

Even though a handful of games have already been confirmed as a next-gen launch or near launch titles, they aren’t yet available for pre-order, leaving their price just as nebulous as the prices of the consoles that will run them. When you try to pre-order 2K21 from the game’s website, it lists the game as the standard $59.99 price. Still, with the next-gen consoles pushing the limits of technology with “3D audio” and support for 8K graphics, it makes sense that game prices might increase to offset the rising cost of development on such hardware.

Gaming is quickly becoming a prohibitively expensive hobby. A $10 increase might not sound like much, but with the overwhelming cost of new consoles themselves and the price of online subscriptions for multiplayer capabilities, working class families might already be priced out of the fun. And, with record unemployment numbers due to the coronavirus, less people than ever might have the money to afford a new console or a $69.99 dollar game anyway.

But, According to 2K, "2K suggested retail prices for its games are meant to represent the value being offered."

"With nearly endless replay value and many new additions and improvements only possible on next-generation consoles, we believe our updated suggested retail price fairly represents the value of NBA 2K21."

Is this a sign of things to come for the industry, or a case of 2K attempting to get the most out of a next-gen game that players could potentially have already owned since September? No word yet, but typically with these things, where one publisher goes, the rest are sure to follow, at least to some degree. If a $70 base price for new video games is deemed successful, it could become a new standard.

The news that next-gen games will cost more than their current-gen counterparts hasn't gone down well with gaming fans. It's particularly hard to swallow when a game in the NBA 2K series increases its price, given the franchise is already littered with microtransactions, virtual currency, and loot boxes. Will 2K Sports remove all of the transactions NBA 2k21 mt and NBA 2k21 virtual currency now that they're charging more for this year's release? This seems unlikely.

While we've seen some of the upcoming games, and even the designs of the new consoles, But the setting of the trailer didn't give much away as to what players can expect in terms of gameplay or features compared to NBA 2K20. There are a lot of unknowns about the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

New NBA 2K21 Gameplay Trailer Offers Why Everything is Game

Earlier today 2K released a new gameplay trailer, this time captured from current generation consoles, which highlighted the game’s biggest stars. Particular attention is paid to another cover star in the shape of Damian Lillard, while the soundtrack is Stormzy’s ‘Audacity’. With the gameplay trailer just releasing today, 2K has so far not revealed many details about what tweaks have been made to the gameplay from last year’s installment. 2K20 probably had the best defensive mechanics of any NBA game ever, so they aren’t likely to tinker too much with that. However, They have clearly changed the jump shot meter, which now runs horizontally rather than vertically, and is clear with a dot rather than filling up with red. It looks a little bit more arcadey than previous versions, and the trailer did focus a lot more on skills and dunks than it did on the breadth of features. A sign that NBA 2K21 is pivoting towards more thrills and spills mentality, or just a flashy trailer designed to ca...
